POSEIDON TEMPLE - SOUNION

SOUNION OF YESTERDAY (444-440 B.C.)

On the rocky peninsula that projects in to the sea at the south-east tip of Attica, the Athenians built sanctuaries to the two most important deities: Poseidon and Athena. The Temple of Poseidon, god of the sea was built on the summit of the rock, which rises 60 m. above the sea, and is surrounded by stout walls. Two temples to Athena Sounias were erected at a lower level.

SOUNION ODE BY ANNE

“Sounion you are my heaven..

Sounion you are my glorious sea..

Sounion you are my holy rock..

Sapphires cannot complete your hidden deep of the ancient soil..

Sapphires  feel ashamed for their tiny photon not easily seen..

But sought to display the depth of hue, and to adorn the human form..

Human language, so inadequate to try to say how I feel..

When I look and breathe of your vivid colors..

And the perfumes of your gently textured Aegean sea”..
